The beautiful Marina, ‘burnt out’ in matters of the heart, promises herself that she will never marry. She will merely ‘use’ men. She owns a private hotel in the centre of St Petersburg. Marina’s exceptional beauty attracts many male admirers to the hotel, though she gives none of them the slightest hope that they can win her. But now there is a new guest: a naval officer called Konstantin Solomatin – a captain of the first rank and a convinced women-hater. Not only does he not experience any romantic feelings for our heroine but also manages, in a fit of rage, to insult Marina by describing her as a ‘kept woman’. The incensed Marina decides to take her revenge on the captain: no matter what happens she will make him love her, then ensure that he suffers from unrequited love. However, in the middle of all of this Marina falls in love herself: he, after all, is the very embodiment of all the best imaginable male qualities!…
